Become confident operating a DSC marine VHF Radio and gain an operators qualification on this excellent and popular one-day examined course.
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) for marine VHF is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF Radiotelephone fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. If you own a marine radio handheld or fixed set, you are required by law to hold an operator’s licence. This qualification is also a pre-requisit for the RYA Coastal Skipper Pracical Course.
Unlike some sea schools, we use real Marine VHF Radio sets on our courses, not software simulators. Our radio sets have been modified so that they do not transmit over the airwaves so students can press the distress button as if they were in a real emergency situation. As well as covering voice communications the course also covers GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress Safety System)including SARTs (Search and Rescue Transponders), EPIRBS (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) and NAVTEX.
When you have successfully completed the exam you will receive an operators license for marine VHF. If you have enjoyed your course then you might consider enrolling on our First Aid Course.
