This shorebased course is taught in a classroom. It is a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. You will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board, and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course. The course requires 40 hours of tuition including two assessment papers.

If you have successfully completed the course syllabus you will receive a completion certificate. If you have enjoyed your sailing experience then you should consider enrolling on a Day Skipper Practical course or Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course.

Previous Experience

Some practical sailing experience is desirable.

Each course lasts 5 consecutive days, 2 long weekends or 5 consecutive Sundays (09:00 to 17:00 each day)

Notepad, soft leaded pencils, pencil sharpener, rubber, Portland chart plotter and dividers.

Other things you should know

Each student will need to purchase an RYA course pack comprising practice charts, exercises, the RYA certification fee and a training almanac. You can purchase a set from us when you book or when you join the course. The course pack costs £35.00 and includes the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course book.
