This course gives a basic introduction to navigation and safety with electronic methods and GPS featuring highly. It is ideal for anyone new to boating or anyone considering taking a flotilla holiday. It is also essential for more experienced skippers and crew who have not yet taken their Day Skipper shorebased course.

The course is particularly useful for crew who want to know how to navigate a boat back to port in the event that something happens to the skipper.

The course is not just for sailors, it is useful for powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and boatmasters. It will also be useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.

By the end of your course you should have a basic awareness and understanding of navigation, tides and safety.

When you have successfully completed the course syllabus you will receive a completion certificate. If you have enjoyed your course then you should consider taking the Competent Crew course or Day Skipper shorebased course.

Previous experience

No previous experience required but some experience onboard a boat is desirable.

Haven Marina, Ipswich, East Anglia.

Duration

Each course lasts 2 days (09:00 to 17:30 each day).

What's included

Tuition, RYA course pack, portland plotter (not dividers) and refreshments. Please note that Lunch is not provided but reasonably priced meals are available at the Marina.

What to bring

Notepad, soft leaded pencils, pencil sharpener, rubber, dividers.
